他出生于美国纽约布鲁克林，7岁时开始正式接受音乐训练。14岁的时候进去纽约音乐艺术高校学习，并且获得了奖学金。1961年，他录制了第一张唱片，此张唱片为他赢得了当年的格莱美最佳新人奖。从那以后他又获得过一次格莱美奖，10词获得提名，总共发行了67张唱片。他早期与RCA唱片公司合作的8年内出了23张唱片。这里的32首歌曲是自己挑选出来的，可谓都是经典作品。
